Line House derives its name from the abundance of linear elements in its design, which create a striking geometric effect. Situated in Cawang, East Jakarta, this 135m² residence was originally a single-story home with a wood-framed mezzanine. As the owner approached retirement, they chose to renovate it into a comfortable retirement home while preserving its function as a gathering place for their extended family. The renovation involved adding a second floor, expanding the total building area to 213m². The owner preferred a discreet and understated facade, opting for a design that appeared modest rather than grand or luxurious. However, the interior was crafted to feel open and airy, maximizing natural light and ventilation, an essential feature given the compact site. The monochrome exterior reinforces the modern aesthetic without being overly conspicuous. Inside, warmth is introduced through neutral wall tones and carefully curated furniture patterns. More private spaces adopt a richer palette, featuring dark brown wood accents and warm white lighting to enhance comfort. A small indoor garden was incorporated at the heart of the family room, reflecting the owner's passion for greenery while adding to the home’s overall aesthetic appeal. The second floor accommodates bedrooms and a home office, allowing the owner to remain active in retirement within a workspace reminiscent of their previous office environment. Line House tells the story of the owner’s journey—from a compact family home to a serene retreat for their growing family. The project highlights simplicity, efficient space utilization, and the thoughtful use of available land.
