Description
Omahdesa is a contemporary house that reinterprets local architectural wisdom through material, craftsmanship, and climate-responsive design. Located in a village renowned for its red brick artisans in Yogyakarta, the project embraces locally sourced materials and traditional construction skills to demonstrate how vernacular knowledge can inform contemporary architecture. Rather than replicating traditional forms, the design adopts an experimental approach that explores new possibilities for brick and clay roof tiles while remaining rooted in its cultural and environmental context. The house is constructed primarily from red brick and clay roof tiles, materials that have long defined the identity of the surrounding village. Their application, however, extends beyond convention through a series of architectural explorations where every formal gesture serves both functional and environmental purposes. One of the project's defining features is a vertical roof element positioned along the side of the house. Inspired by the lightweight construction of clay roof tiles, this distinctive wall reduces structural loads while creating a layered envelope that improves thermal insulation by minimizing direct solar heat gain. The spatial organization prioritizes openness, adaptability, and environmental performance. Dry gardens surround the building, introducing natural daylight and cross-ventilation into every room while creating generous visual connections to the landscape.Passive environmental strategies continue throughout the house. Skylights introduce daylight into every major space, while concealed ceiling openings promote natural airflow, particularly in areas such as the bathrooms where ventilation is essential for controlling humidity. By integrating local materials, traditional craftsmanship, and passive design principles, Omahdesa demonstrates how contemporary architecture can remain environmentally responsible while celebrating the cultural identity of its place.
