Description
In 2019, through a collaboration with one of our building contractor partners, we were introduced to a new group of clients who wanted to design a four-star hotel in Palu, Central Sulawesi. The original three-star hotel had been demolished following the devastating 2018 earthquake, which left only the wedding hall on the eastern side intact. Given the hotel’s location right in front of the beach, the tsunami that followed also severely affected the ground floor. Our initial concept was to design A RESILIENT FOUR-STAR HOTEL CAPABLE OF WITHSTANDING FUTURE EARTHQUAKES AND TSUNAMIS. The hotel features 160 GUEST ROOMS, located from the third to the seventh floors, each offering stunning views of the bay to the north and the mountains and city to the south, complemented by modern interior designs. Because the previous hotel was well-known as a MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) destination, we incorporated SEVEN VERSATILE MEETING ROOMS OF DIFFERENT SIZES to accommodate a variety of functions. Our design concept not only prioritizes structural resilience against earthquakes and tsunamis but also pays homage to the community’s losses from the 2018 disaster, CREATING A SPACE OF BOTH STRENGTH AND REMEMBRANCE. The client requested that the new hotel be connected to the existing wedding hall but be built away from the old hotel’s footprint. To accommodate this, we designed the new structure around the former site, creating a U-shaped layout. We raised the ground level, transforming it into a parking structure, while positioning the lobby, drop-off area, and other essential facilities on the second level to safeguard them in case of a tsunami. The building’s structural design was engineered TO ENDURE EARTHQUAKES of up to a 9.0 magnitude on the Richter scale.
