Description
Pavo is a project we designed for the son of a distinguished lawyer from Surabaya. He owns a 4,600m2 plot of land in Batu and commissioned us to create a café with a 400 seat capacity that would also serve as a tourist destination. This project marked our first experience working with SIGNIFICANT TOPOGRAPHY, as the steep site features a height difference of 25-30 meters from the main street to the bottom edge. The site offers nearly 360-degree views, with mountains stretching from north to south and a panoramic view of Batu city to the east. Inspired by this setting, we aimed to create a SUSTAINABLE, MODERN SPACE THAT ENCOURAGES VISITORS TO CONNECT WITH NATURE. We began by leading guests down a series of ramps, then strategically arranged six stacked boxes as the main structure, ensuring each section offers unobstructed views. TO HARMONIZE THE BUILDING WITH ITS NATURAL SURROUNDINGS, we positioned the boxes to minimize tree removal and carved them to resemble rock formations. By placing the structures on stilts, we reduced the need for extensive earthwork, preserving the natural landscape. We also incorporated lush greenery on top of each structure, BLENDING THE BUILDING SEAMLESSLY INTO THE LANDSCAPE when viewed from a distance. This approach makes this café A PEACEFUL RETREAT for visitors looking to immerse themselves in nature, away from the bustle of urban life.
